About Pack 6
Cub Scout Pack 6 in Brookline, Massachusetts, is part of the Great Blue Hill District of the Spirit of Adventure Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Cub Scouting is a year-round family program designed for children who are in kindergarten through fifth grade. Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. The Aims of Scouting are character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.
Our sponsoring organization is the United Parish in Brookline. All children in kindergarten through grade 5 and their families are welcome to join Pack 6, regardless of personal faith or lack thereof, color, race, religion, ethnic background, gender, sexual orientation, or economic status. The Boy Scouts of America believe that Black Lives Matter.
A note on Boy Scouts of America's policies:
Brookline Cub Scout Pack 6 and Boy Scout Troop 6, along with other local scouting organizations, actively support diversity within our organizations. We reflect and honor the cultural, ethnic, religious, and lifestyle diversity that we are blessed to have in Brookline. All children are eligible and welcome to join us.
Pack 6 wholeheartedly supports the decisions of BSA national leadership that end the exclusion of children and adult leaders from Scouting on the bases of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Our position on this is a long-held one, predating the national decisions. In 2001, when we were part of the Boston Minuteman Council, that council broke with national leadership and adopted a clear statement of nondiscrimination:
"The mission of the Boston Minuteman Council, Boy Scouts of America is to provide character development, citizenship training, growth in physical and mental fitness, and leadership opportunities for the young people of the Boston metropolitan area. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our members, and we are committed to providing young people with an educational and stimulating environment in which to learn and grow. Through the Scout Oath and Law, we pledge to respect all people and to defend the rights of others. Bias, intolerance and unlawful discrimination are unacceptable within the ranks of the Boston Minuteman Council. The Boston Minuteman Council serves youth through volunteers in Packs, Troops and other units without regard to color, race, religion, ethnic background, sexual orientation or economic status."
In May 2013, the Boy Scouts of America changed its national policy, and decided no longer to exclude scouts solely because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. At that time, Chuck Eaton, Chief Executive of the Boston Minuteman Council, issued the following statement:
"This vote by the Boy Scouts of America is a positive step. This decision recognizes all youth are welcome in Boy Scouts, and the organization will be a supportive environment for gay Scouts and all youth. The Boston Minuteman Council and other scout councils have been an active voice for change within the framework of the organization, and we applaud BSA for voting to make that change."
In 2015, the Boston Minuteman Council merged with the Yankee Clipper Council to form the Spirit of Adventure Council, which abides by all national Scouting policies.
Also in 2015, the Boy Scouts of America changed its national policy to no longer exclude adult leaders from Scouting solely based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
